Growth in Transit: India’s logistics story unfolds

The logistics industry in India has emerged as a key contributor to the country’s journey towards economic prosperity. It is aligned with the vision of making India the third-largest economy globally. As the industry is on the brink of major evolution with massive infrastructural enhancements, technology adoption, and sustainability initiatives, we believe 2025 will be a revolutionary year for the sector.

2024: Setting the foundation
This year has been critical in establishing the foundation for a solid logistics network. India’s freight movement is heavily inclined toward road transportation, which moves 66% of cargo (in ton-km), followed by rail (31%), shipping (3%), and air (1%). To aid this cargo movement, India expanded its road network, which increased connectivity and decreased transportation time for goods. Railways underwent a similar transformation, with the government’s focus towards creating dedicated freight corridors to provide high-speed, dedicated freight tracks that eliminate delays and increase efficiency. Government-led digital programs such as ULIP, ICEGATE, and e-logs have streamlined operations, reduced paperwork, and enhanced transparency to make the logistics and transportation operations more efficient.
